Expanded Beam Performance

The Expanded Beam Performance technology delivers outstanding optical performance and remains stable even under mechanical stress, environmental influences, or in harsh environments.

Thanks to its contactless design, Expanded Beam connections are particularly resistant to contamination and easy to clean. Under normal conditions, cleaning is not required, ensuring reliable and long-lasting transmission – without any damage.

Rely on premium transmission quality and maximum durability, even with frequent mating cycles!

How Expanded Beam Performance works

  • Up to 96 fibers
  • No cleaning, only if necessary
  • Extremely low insertion loss values even under harsh environments
  • 50,000 mating cycles
  • Insertion loss:
    • SM: < 0,35 dB (typical) / < 0.7 dB (max.)
    • MM: < 0,15 dB (typical) / < 0.3 dB (max.)
  • Return loss
    • SM: > 60 dB (typical) / ≥ 55 dB (min.)
    • MM: > 45 dB (typical) / ≥ 35 dB (min.)

FAQ about EBP technology

General Questions

What is Expanded Beam Performance (EBP) technology and how does it work?

EBP technology is an advanced fiber optic solution that uses a lens to expand the light beam. As a result, the light is transmitted error-free from one ferrule to the other via lenses. The ferrule comprises 12 individual lenses, which supports both singlemode and multimode applications and impresses with improved attenuation values compared to standard market solutions. It combines the advantages of classic ferrule solutions with those of lens-based approaches:

  • Maintenance-free: No cleaning required
  • Low attenuation values: Extremely low input and output attenuation (IL/RL)
  • High compactness: Space-saving design
  • Optimal connectivity: In combination with high-quality ODU connectors
For which applications is EBP technology particularly suitable?

It is particularly suitable for applications in harsh environments, both indoors and outdoors, where reliable and interference-free data transmission is required.

Technical questions

How many mating cycles are possible with EBP technology?

ODU EBP systems are designed for up to 50,000 mating cycles, which guarantees a long-lasting connection.

How high is the insertion loss with EBP technology?

The insertion loss is typically < 0.35 dB for singlemode and < 0.15 dB for multimode, which ensures efficient signal transmission.

What return loss values are achieved?

The return loss is typically > 60 dB for singlemode and > 45 dB for multimode, which contributes to high signal quality.

Are the EBP systems suitable for singlemode and multimode fibers?

Yes, ODU's EBP technology is suitable for both singlemode and multimode fibers.

What temperature ranges can the EBP systems cover?

The EBP systems are designed for a temperature range of -65 °C to +105 °C, which allows them to be used in various environments.

Is it necessary to clean the connectors with EBP technology?

No cleaning is required under normal conditions. However, the connections are easy to clean if necessary, as there is no direct contact between the contact ends, which increases their resistance to soiling.
