Physical Contact

ODU Fiber Optic Physical Contact solutions are cost-efficient optical connections for all standard data transmission requirements. We offer them as a ready-made complete system that includes our robust ODU connectors. The Physical Contact solution is characterized by a very low insertion loss, with which up to 1,000 mating cycles can be achieved.

The built-in contact system is available in multimode and singlemode versions. Within the ODU connector, the polish is 8° ground (APC) as standard to ensure the best possible return loss values. Due to the small fiber end face, it is particularly important that it is clean. To guarantee optimum optical transmission with high data rates, the connectors must be cleaned before each connection process.

FAQ about Physical Contact technology

General Questions

What is Physical Contact (PC) technology?

ODU's PC technology enables cost-efficient optical connections for standard data rate requirements based on classic ceramic ferrules. It is offered as a pre-assembled complete system together with robust ODU connectors and is therefore more robust than conventional interface plugs.

What advantages does PC technology offer over other connection technologies?

The economical PC technology is characterized by very low insertion loss and high return loss, which enables efficient and reliable data rates.

For which applications is PC technology particularly suitable?

It is suitable for applications that require a stable and low-loss data rate.

Technical questions

How many mating cycles are possible with PC technology?

ODU PC systems are designed for up to 1,000 mating cycles and thus offer a long-lasting connection.

What types of fibers are supported?

PC technology is available in both multimode and singlemode versions.

How high is the insertion loss with PC technology?

The insertion loss is ≤ 0.5 dB per contact side, which ensures efficient signal transmission.

How high is the return loss?

The return loss is > 40 dB for singlemode and > 30 dB for multimode, which contributes to high signal quality.

Which polish is used for the connectors?

An 8° polish (APC) is used as standard within the ODU connector to achieve optimum return loss values.

Installation & maintenance

How important is cleaning the connectors in PC technology?

Due to the small fiber end face, it is particularly important to clean the connectors before each mating process to ensure optimum optical transmission with high data rates over 1,000 mating cycles.

Are the PC systems easy to install?

Yes, the PC systems are available as pre-assembled complete systems, which makes installation easier.
